|
For Immediate Release Thursday, April 2, 2009
Mayor Baker, IAFF Local 1590 President Turner Announce City Firefighters Contract Settlement Three-Year Contract Agreement is Reached for Fiscal Years 2008 through 2010; Mayor Thanks Union and City Negotiators for Reaching a Fair Settlement in a Challenging Economic Climate
Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker and Lieutenant Kevin Turner, President of International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 1590, today announced agreement on a new three-year contract for the City’s 170 firefighters covering Fiscal Years 2008 through 2010. Members of Local 1590 voted Wednesday night to accept the City’s latest contract offer. City firefighters had been without a contract since July 1, 2007. The settlement agreement will be submitted to Wilmington City Council for consideration at its April 16 meeting.
“The City is pleased to arrive at the agreement with Local 1590,” said Mayor Baker. “It was important for a variety of reasons that we settle this issue. The firefighters are hard-working, dedicated employees who provide one of the most important services offered by City government so we needed to settle the contract for everyone’s peace of mind. This settlement also gives us a clearer picture of our overall City expenditures versus revenue, which is very important now as we continue to manage this year’s budget and plan for next fiscal year’s budget and beyond. We are proud of our firefighters and the outstanding service they provide to citizens, workers, and visitors.”
"I would like to thank our negotiating team for all their hard work. Our members are happy to have a new contract." said Local 1590 President Turner.

Baker today thanked Members of City Council for their support of the Upstairs Project, which will help to revitalize the upper floors of buildings along Market Street in Downtown Wilmington and support the tremendous growth in residential and business development that is evident throughout the City. The Mayor also presented 10 reasons why this project is vital to the City’s continued prosperity.
Here is a statement from the Mayor, followed by the reasons why this is a wonderful project for the City as a whole:
“Over the past several years, Wilmington has emerged as a regional leader in urban revitalization efforts through the creation of thousands of new jobs and thousands of new residential homeownership opportunities. We have accomplished much by working together and making prudent decisions about how to spend taxpayer dollars to support a growing City. Today we are welcoming more and more people to Wilmington to live, work, and enjoy life. We have a strong record of making the correct decisions on behalf of the citizens we serve; as a result of our actions, the City has become stronger.
“We are now in a period of economic uncertainty, making it even more imperative that we be extremely careful, sensible and practical in our decision-making. At the same time, the last thing we should do—or will do—is reject opportunities for progress that is leveraged largely by private investment.
