23rd recorded homicide of the year
City of Wilmington News and Information

    For Immediate Release
    Thursday, October 30, 2008

Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker issued the following statement tonight in view of the City’s 23rd recorded homicide of the year. The Mayor is reassuring citizens that the fight against crime fueled largely by drugs and guns will continue forcefully, professionally and effectively. Most importantly he is asking everyone to use this record-tying moment to reflect on some serious issues that feed the crime problem…issues for which there are very few solutions.
    Mayor Baker’s Statement:

“The police are doing an excellent job of policing this City based on the current staffing of the department and the dysfunctional nature of the people who are contributing to the crime problem. We are keeping our eyes on both short-range and long-range plans and goals for fighting crime, and we will continue to pursue our goals in a professional and effective manner. If it were not for the excellent work of the Wilmington Police Department, our situation would be much worse.

We cannot arrest and police our way out of this problem. People clearly know this to be the case, yet they continue to refuse to focus their attention on issues unrelated to law enforcement that need to be corrected.

I would urge everyone to use this record-tying moment to ask yourselves what we as a City, County and State are going to do about issues such as the easy access to drugs and guns, children who are having children, the drop-out crisis in our education system, the lack of early childhood education, the lack of programs for those who suffer from mental illness,

Young Artists Fill the Windows of Downtown Wilmington with their Masterpieces
Mayor Baker Opens Wilmington’s New “Art in Windows” Program

Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker is endorsing color and vibrancy in the front windows all along the streets of Downtown Wilmington by helping to launch “Art in Windows,” a program showcasing the creativity of some of the youngest members of the Downtown Wilmington community—school children. The children have already begun to display their art masterpieces prominently in windows along Market Street.  Art in Windows is a partnership project of Wilmington Renaissance Corporation (WRC) and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

“This program highlights the creativity of some of the youngest members of the downtown Wilmington community – our school children,” said Mayor Baker. “Artwork will be displayed in storefront windows year-round as a means to help brighten our streetscape and also to encourage citizens to walk from window and to window and enjoy the students’ work, while patronizing our downtown businesses.”

The artwork was created by students from Wilmington Friends Preschool, Christina Cultural Arts Center, Kuumba Academy and Elementary Workshop Montessori School. The current display of children’s artwork highlights a fall theme.

“The program is a great way to allow some of our youngest artists to express their creativity and be involved in the community,” said Carrie Gray, Managing Director of WRC. “The participating Market Street merchants have graciously allotted portions of their street-level windows to this project and it has become a wonderful partnership between school children and the business owners.”
